Large Chip Carved Swan Square Wood Butter Press Mold Antique Treenware
This large, impressive butter mold would be a standout in any collection! It is antique wooden kitchenware at its best -- artistry created by a talented carver from a "cube" of wood. The mold itself is a single piece -- all four corners are squared off to make eight sides instead of the usual four. The eight sides of the lower box continue up into the convex curved edge top -- and -- best of all -- the stamp design is a rare chip-carved swan ! PLEASE SEE OUR PICTURES.
SIZE is an eye-catching approximately 4.25 inches square on the bottom "box" which is approximately 3 inches tall. The wood on the box section is approximately 1/4 inch thick. Above a groove completely around the lower portion, the top rises curving back and up to a square (approximately 3 x 3 inches) with a center hole through which the plunger passes. A shallow incised ring surrounds the hole.
Inside, the press is approximately 3 inches square and a full 1 inch thick, highlighted in the center by a highly detailed swan approximately 2 inches tall. Incredibly, you can see its feathers and even its eyes! It is chip carved and the carving is about 1/8 inch deep in the center of the bird. The outer rim design may look simple at first glance, but look harder - each little bar is perfectly spaced!
The color and patina of this word are simply gorgeous - rich, deep chestnut browns with no knots and a tremendous amount of natural grain with color variations. We gave it a coat of olive oil from the bottle we use on the dining table.
CONDITION: Clean, complete and can be carefully used if you wish! Fabulous for display with NO gouges, off colors, NO broken or missing parts. Please look at our pictures. It does have some expected age cracking: There are several cracks that start at the top. The worst two go across the curved area where one ends and the other continues down the side where it peters out. ALSO, there is a very tight crack at the bottom (this shows best at lower left in our PICTURE #5) that extends about 1 inch up the side. These should not worsen if the mold is used carefully and not allowed to get wet.
What an exceptional addition to any strong collection of old treen antique kitchen items - with such obvious artistry and its large size, this mold must have been created for a special use.
