This carving in this old butter stamp reminds me of Eastlake style. The design is a deeply carved, four-lobed leaf that looks like the artist may have had a blackberry or briar bush in mind.
The wood has darkened to a rich, deep umber, nearly black in places and wonderfully appealing. The grain is very fine with no knots, and may be maple, but we aren't sure. Please note, there is NO paint or stain on this, the color is natural.
CONDITION is lovely, with NO cracks, chips, gouges or repairs. There is one tiny edge split on the inside press (SEE our last picture please). Otherwise, no splits of any kind. The handle is firmly attached.
We gave this a coat of olive oil, which of course is edible, so it can be used if you wish ! There is a little dust (it shows in the PICTURE ENLARGEMENTS but is nearly impossible to see in real life) but that will clean right off.
SIZE: See our pictures, please, a nice larger one at 3-1/2 inches across, with the mold 3 inches tall.
