This is a good old Armspear wire bottom lantern from the Pennsylvania Railroad. It is a "tall globe" lantern. The frame is stamped PRR and the globe is a hard to find melon shape, factory etched PENNSYLVANIA LINES. This lantern is a good candidate to restore, or it would display just fine as is.

THE FRAME is a beehive style - with NO damage to the top!! It is complete and sound. It stands perfectly flat on a tabletop. It is a harder to find single horizontal wire guard model. There are NO breaks anywhere, and all the solder is sound. The stamped lettering around the smoke dome top is sharp and clear. There appears to be little if any pitting and NO rust anywhere on the frame. It is extremely clean inside the lid and smoke dome, and inside the fuel fount holder. If you look at the top you can see a reddish tint that appears to be old paint - we left it as found.

The fuel fount is unusual - it is stamped with the PRR Keystone logo on the bottom. There are multiple holes in the fount but they should not worsen as long as it is not kept in damp surroundings. The brass burner is marked ADLAKE and the tin fount is stamped USE LONG TIME BURNING OIL ONLY on its top. It fits the frame fine, and is acceptable for this frame. The wick raiser is stiff but turns.

THE GLOBE is a scarce melon shape. It is strongly etched PENNSYLVANIA LINES - a harder marking to find than PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD. This is an OLD globe that was made in a 2-piece mold, with mold lines showing. There are specks and spots on the glass, and the glass has yellowed slightly from age and use. It is interesting old glass with squiggles and a straw mark across the back. WE DID NOT TRY TO CLEAN THE GLASS! There are expected scuffs documenting use on the top and bottom rims. There is an old flake on the top rim that disappears completely into the smoke dome when the shade is placed in the frame.

This would be an excellent addition to an interesting Pennsylvania Railroad collection, or a great starter for a new collector's railway grouping.
