This big brass heart shape switch lock is an eye catcher with its maker name ADLAKE cast strongly down the dust cover bar over the keyhole. On the back is further cast SWITCH. It comes with a good brass switch key from the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad -- the famous Rock Island Line.
The key, also made by ADLAKE, is further stamped with serial number 59198, and with such a high number may have been made toward the end of service. It is in fine condition with just light wear showing on the bit edges and barrel end. It is newer than the lock, but it works well with it, and they make a good pair.
The internal spring in the lock is strong: the dust cover resists being pushed to the side and then snaps back over the keyhole on its own when released.
Several links of what must be original chain are attached to the clevis. The loop is stiff and does not move readily.
Both the padlock and key have darkened and the lock especially is a deep, chestnutty brown with some naturally aged shading that strongly enhances the cast markings.
IMPORTANT: PLEASE SEE OUR LAST PICTURE -- It is minor but the keyhole appears to perhaps have been tampered with/enlarged very slightly to accommodate a key bit with more curve. HOWEVER, despite having a slightly straighter bit, the CRI&P key works as though they've always been together. Any key hole enlargement would have been done for a key other than this one. It is just one of the mysteries we would know if this old lock could talk.
