This oblong dish is a celery serving tray or trough, from the New York Central Railroad. The pattern is "DeWitt Clinton," named for the locomotive depicted in the tiny cameo within the wide rim band.
Size is approximately 9-1/2 inches long x 4 inches wide.
CONDITION: A beautiful example with NO cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. The artwork is sharp, highly detailed and exceptionally clear with no runs or blurs. The cameo is centered well along one side.
On the bottom, this dish carries the sought after double marking: DESIGN PATENTED / NEW YORK CENTRAL LINES and also the OPCO SYRACUSE CHINA bottom stamp.
IMPORTANT -- The date code F-5 translates into May 1925. The NY Central first ordered this pattern in 1925, making this one of the very first pieces purchased -- yet it is, amazingly, in wonderful condition.
The tribute to New York State's first steam locomotive and appealing design made this pattern so popular with the public that it was used until the early 1950s.
If you enjoy DeWitt Clinton china and need a celery dish -- look no further!
