Here is a coffee or tea size cup and saucer set made by Syracuse China for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The pattern is called Mountain Laurel, depicting a spray of flowers from the beloved wild shrub found alongside many PRR routes. It is also the State Flower of Pennsylvania, the "Keystone State."
CONDITION is lovely with NO cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. There are a very few light surface marks but you must tilt the pieces in bright light to find them. Note the flowers are placed on BOTH sides ! and none on the saucer, which is correct.
Please notice this is a slant-sided cup. Straight sided cups were also made. Both Syracuse China and Shenango made this pattern for the PRR (and a sample made by Mayer has been reported). Our set offered here was made by Syracuse and is bottom marked appropriately. The cup date code 101-J stands for October 1972, and the saucer date code 7-HH stands for July 1953 but despite the age difference they pair up wonderfully together, with the cup fitting snugly. The Pennsylvania first used Mountain Laurel in the 1950s and continued ordering it through the early 1970s.
IMPORTANT: Mountain Laurel was an "exclusive" pattern, meaning that the manufacturer sold pieces made in this design only to the railroad and no other customers. ONLY the dinner plates and large platters carry a bottom marking identifying them as Pennsylvania Railroad pieces. NONE of the smaller pieces carried this marking, so they are often mistaken for ordinary restaurant ware when in fact they actually were railway-ordered.
This would be a nice set not only for a railroad collector, but also for anyone who enjoys Pennsylvania or realistic floral designs on dinnerware.
