This is a harder to find brakeman's lantern. It is from the New York, Ontario & Western Railway, which operated in northern New Jersey, upstate New York and Northeastern Pennsylvania from 1884 until 1957.
It is strongly stamped NYO&W on the lid. It is maker stamped Dietz Vesta New York USA on top of the smoke dome. This is a "high top" Vesta model with a flat-sided fuel fount collectors call a "tuna can." The Dietz company made Vestas in the earlier to mid-1900s, when they were phased out in favor of shorter-globe "Kero" models.
CONDITION is terrific with the only issue being just the lightest surface rust here and there. The frame is sound, sturdy and complete with NO missing parts and NO breaks. Even the tin tubes are rust-free. The very top of the smoke dome does have a slight dent and it does show slight rusting on the surface. We are offering this lamp as found, and it would be a good candidate for a full restoration, or it can sit on a display shelf as is.
THE GLOBE is an authentic Vesta globe with cast lettering at the top DIETZ VESTA NEW YORK . It has no cracks or chips, only the expected light rim scuffs from use.
A nice representative of a railway that is difficult to find relics from and a good addition to any antique railroad lantern collection.
