"Restaurant China Volume 2" is "the" reference guide for anyone interested in the commercial dinnerware that is called "restaurantware." Authored by expert Barbara Conroy, its subtitle says it all: "Identification & Value Guide for Restaurant, Airline, Ship & Railroad Dinnerware." It is a must-have for any serious collector.
There is no other guide anywhere nearly as comprehensive as this one. It covers dinnerware, serving pieces and accessories designed specifically for use in commercial food service (as opposed to household tableware). Collectors use various terms: restaurant ware, cafe ware, diner or institutional china, hotelware or commercial china. No matter -- it's all here in this guide that includes important reference material IN DEPTH about restaurants, hotels, diners, airline companies, ships and railroad trains. The list goes on: government agencies, railway stations, airports, military facilities, schools, hospitals, department and drug stores, amusement parks, casinos ... this is the best place to find information.
This huge book is fully 9 inches across by 11 inches tall, with 656 pages. It is 1.5 inches thick and weighs a massive 5.5 pounds! It is a hard cover with a plasticized cover over "boards." The inside pages are high quality, glossy stock. It is overflowing with full color photographs, illustrations of manufacturer marks and lists of known customers.
Printed only one time in 1999 by Collector Books, copies have become very hard to find, having been snapped up by serious collectors who have kept them.
The book is broken down into dozens of chapters, each dealing with a manufacturer. Organized alphabetically by company name, it presents histories, date codes, backstamps, photos of ware with value ranges and even company catalog pages when available. In addition to the major dinnerware manufacturers, many lesser known companies are included, both American and from other nations.
CONDITION: "Bookshelf new" as it would be found in a bookstore. It is very clean inside and out. The only way you can tell it is not unread is that it does not "crack" when you open it. There are NO missing pages, NO writing inside, NO stains or ripped/torn or damaged pages. There are some light surface marks and scuffs on the outside covers (expected from a copy that was printed in 1999, and hard to see unless you tilt the book in bright light and look).
IMPORTANT: the bottom right hand corner of the book was damaged in shipping and has a serious bump (SEE OUR PICTURE with the RED ARROW ! ) but that is cosmetic and doesn't affect the reference material. Also, apparently from the same incident, the spine is slightly skewed (SEE OUR LAST PICTURE) but again, not terrible damage.
COLLECTOR NOTE: The companion to this book, "Restaurant China Volume 1" is also extremely useful, but is about half the size of Volume 2. Volume 1 includes helpful chapters on particular collecting areas, but nowhere near the information about manufacturers and production companies and distributors found in Volume 2.
