This gorgeous dappled carousel horse with an appealing sweet face, tossing mane and real hair tail dates from about the year 1900. It is a jumper, created at "Colonel" Charles W. Parker's carousel factory in Abilene, Kansas before 1911, the year that Parker moved his operation to Leavenworth, Kansas. At approximately 66 inches long, this is a full size horse. It is carved of basswood and has a hollow body.
Made for one of Parker's turn-of-the-century steam riding galleries, this horse is a hard to find "transitional" carving from the time period just before 1911, when Parker began to produce wildly flamboyant, ostentatious figures with over-emphasized, exaggerated bodies at his new Leavenworth operation.
Not many of the more realistic, earlier Abilene horses like this one were produced, and even fewer are known to have survived -- here is your opportunity to own one!
It is individually authenticated as genuine by a nationally recognized carousel authority, and has the accompanying paperwork.
CONDITION: Needs nothing! Solid and sound, carved wood with a correct hollow body. NO breaks or any damage. There are a few very minor seam separations, expected in these older wooden horses. Fully restored (an older restoration by an acclaimed carousel restoration artist from Maryland), complete with glass eyes (probably original) and a beautiful, real horsehair tail. Stand is included.
IMPORTANT: The metal rod on the right hind leg is there to prevent people trying to ride the horse from stepping on the leg and breaking it. The leg is solid and sound.
The display stand is included, along with a hard cover copy of the wonderful book "Art of the Carousel" by Charlotte Dinger, where similar horses are shown in the chapter about C. W. Parker.
Also included is written documentation from the carousel authority mentioned above, guaranteeing the authenticity of the horse.
