This is a very difficult to find Gray Mercury pattern cup and saucer from the New York Central Railroad. It is a full size for serving coffee or tea. Made by Syracuse China (the only other manufacturer of this pattern was Buffalo China), the cup is date coded 10-JJ (October 1955). The saucer carries the Econo-Rim ware mark, and is date coded BB-2 (February 1947). This design was made ONLY for the railway, never for another customer.
Recently surfaced information confirms that in fact "Gray Mercury" dinnerware was used in the silver/gray and red/maroon themed 20th Century Limited name train dining cars. Previously, it had been thought that this pale grayish color was a production mistake, because the decoration on standard "Mercury" dinnerware is either reddish orange or brown, but firm records have surfaced otherwise.
CONDITION is lovely, with virtually no surface marks from use. You will not find one that displays better. There are absolutely no cracks, chips or repairs. Especially important is that the top logos are free of imperfections: Each " NYC " is, and the vertical lines in the design are straight, clear, without breaks and run completely across from one edge to the other.
This scarce set would be a fantastic addition to any serious collection of railroad dining car china.
