This is a china celery dish from the New York Central Railroad. The pattern name is "Mercury." With its row of stripes broken by the initials NYC it is very deco looking.
This dish is bottom marked correctly DESIGN COPYRIGHTED / MADE EXPRESSLY FOR / NEW YORK CENTRAL on the underside, near an Old Ivory ware mark CC8 , which is the Syracuse China date code for August 1948. There is no specific Syracuse China bottom mark, but Syracuse was the primary maker of this pattern and the style of the date code identifies it as Syracuse's Old Ivory line.
SIZE is approximately 10 inches long by 4 inches wide.
CONDITION is superb with almost no signs of use. NO cracks, chips, flakes, crazing or repairs. The rust-brown lines are straight and the design is sharp and clear. The left-most line has some stray glaze spots in it; as can be seen in the photo the ends of the line are not completely even over the rim edge.
Mercury pieces were made with and without the bottom railroad marking. The presence of this marking, as on this dish, is more desirable.
Celery dishes in Mercury can be difficult to find. This one would be a terrific addition to any better collection of railway passenger dining car items.
