If you collect Railroad uniform buttons -- here it is -- one of the very scarce copies of "THE" Railroad Button book, by Don VanCourt. This is the only identification and value guide about American and Canadian railway buttons in the hobby. It is signed by author VanCourt on the first inside page.
This book is extremely comprehensive, including identification and descriptions of buttons from the uniforms worn by employees of hundreds of United States railway operations (both steam and diesel, antique and modern) and also includes Canadian operations. Buttons are pictured and a given a rarity/desirability value. Known maker(s) and size(s) produced also are listed. Also included is a very educational discussion of new collector tips, types of buttons, button construction and suggestions about cleaning (or not).
This book is a hardcover, complete with its original dust jacket. It is a stated First Edition, printed in 1987, copyrighted by the Author. (IMPORTANT: this book has never been reprinted. Copies of the original edition are extremely hard to find, because the first printing was a limited number of copies. )
CONDITION: "PRISTINE" - far better than "gently used." It is exceptionally clean, and is undamaged. The only way you can tell it is not off-the-shelf brand new is because it does not "crack" when you open it.
SIZE: A heavy 280 pages, 8-3/4 inches x 11-1/4 inches. The book itself weighs nearly 4 pounds.
This is Volume 1 of a three-volume set authored by VanCourt, who is an authority on transportation buttons. The other two are : Vol. 2, Transit (trolleys and interurban lines), and Vol. 3, Airline and Steamship. ANY of them are incredibly hard to find -- so don't miss your chance on this one !!
