If you collect Railroad uniform buttons -- here it is -- one of the very scarce copies of "THE" Railroad Button book, by Don VanCourt. This is the only identification and value book about American and Canadian railway buttons that we know of.
This individual copy is in "PRISTINE" condition - far better than "gently used." The only way you can tell it's not off the shelf brand new is because it does not "crack" when you open it. It is exceptionally clean, and is undamaged.
It is signed by author VanCourt on the first inside page.
This is a stated First Edition, printed in 1987, copyrighted by the Author. (Actually it is an "Only" edition because it's never been reprinted; and copies are extremely difficult to find, because the first printing was not many!) This is a hardcover, complete with its original dust jacket.
SIZE: A heavy 280 pages, 8-3/4 inches x 11-1/4 inches. The book itself weighs nearly 4 pounds.
This book covers buttons from the uniforms worn by employees of mostly American railways (both steam and diesel, antique and modern) but also includes Canadian roads. Buttons are described and a rarity/desirability value is given (great for comparison), known maker(s) and size(s) are listed. A very educational discussion of new collector tips, types of buttons, button construction and suggestions about cleaning (or not).
This is Volume 1 of a three-volume set. The other two are : Vol. 2, Transit, and Vol. 3, Airline and Steamship. ANY of them are incredibly hard to find -- so don't miss your chance on this one !!
