This intriguing pattern was used on china aboard the famous name trains "City of New Orleans" and "Panama Limited" by the Illinois Central Railroad. Swashbuckling pirates, palm trees and warships on the seas rollick around the wide rim in full color.
These plates were made ONLY by Syracuse China and were never railroad bottom marked. They are 9-1/2 inches in diameter.
This plate is Syracuse China's Ye Old Ivory ware. Having escaped that mark, it does carry a date code of Z-3 (March 1945).
CONDITION of this plate is extremely nice with very light surface marks from utensils. They are hard to see without tilting the plate in bright light. NO cracks, chips, flakes, hairlines or repairs. The design is bright and the illustrations are sharp and clear.
COLLECTOR NOTE: Only dinner plates were made with the Pirate decoration. Companion pieces were a pattern called "Coral" with salmon pink/floral stencil design with a white border. The ICRR also used Coral exclusively on the "City of Miami" name train.
