This adorable, solid pewter Pekingese doggie is looking for a Forever Home ! At just over 1.25 inches long, it rests comfortably on a fingertip! but look at the incredible detail -- you can clearly see the expressive, deep set eyes and button nose.
This little Peke is lying down, with one hind foot stretched out behind as they tend to do. Its glorious long coat flows realistically. Pekingese are wonderful companions, with great personalities and tremendous character. They are a very ancient breed of toy dog, and a favorite of royalty in China, where they originated. They are called "Lion Dogs" because of their resemblance to Chinese guardian lion figures.
On the bottom of this figurine is an artist signature P DAVIS, along with the stamp RAWCLIFFE PEWTER (c) 1982. To the best of my memory, because a respected American Kennel Club judge had significant influence at that time, Rawcliffe produced figurines of nearly every AKC-recognized dog breed, which became instantly popular as show trophies and gifts.
Rawcliffe Pewter was founded in 1903, producing decorative pieces in pewter, silver and gold. I could not find out much about this company, which apparently was located in Rhode Island. The company gained respect worldwide for its superb craftsmanship, with hand cast sculptures being hand finished, with strict quality standards. It was sold in 2002 and is probably best known among today's collectors for its dragons and medieval theme creations.
