This exquisitely tiny one-finger pantry box was made by a skilled Shaker craftsman. It is beautifully preserved with one graceful finger tightly affixed to the box and one finger tightly affixed to the lid -- each with a single nail. Its warm natural color just glows with terrific patina.

SIZE is a breathtaking 1-1/2 inches tall; just under 3 inches wide and 3-3/4 inches long.

The outer sides are shiny with an old clear finish. The top, bottom and inside are not.

There are bumps and marks from age and use adding character and interest -- a very few inside but almost all on the outside of the top. On the inside of the top, apparently a former owner penciled her initials. These have lightened with time and are not readily seen. We can see an A, a middle initial we can't make out, and a C. (See our last picture.)

I found this box many years ago in Hoosick, New York, not far from the New Lebanon Shaker community site. This area - south of the original Watervliet, NY settlement, is rich in Shaker history and memorabilia. We are also close to the sites of Shaker communities in Canaan, New York and Pittsfield, Richmond and Hancock, Massachusetts.
