Here is a terrific china side dish called a "baker," from the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACLRR), made by Buffalo China. The pretty Flora of the South pattern is one of the most attractive railroad china designs, highly detailed flowers in full color.

At approximately 6 inches long and 4-1/4 inches wide, these dishes are deep enough that they are frequently mistaken for soap dishes, but they were actually made for serving a baked potato or a side of vegetables to an onboard dining car passenger.

There are three different full color flower transfers, each depicting one of the flowers that could be seen along the ACL's route. A pretty light green rim stripe completes the picture.

It is correctly RRBS backmarked: Ye Olde Ivory Buffalo China / Flora of the South / Hibiscus, Jessamine, Poinsettia / Made Especially for / Atlantic Coast Line Railroad .

CONDITION: Very pretty with almost no signs of use. If there are light utensil marks on the surface you must tilt it in the brightest light and look hard to find any. Absolutely no cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. Our only issue is several tiny dark dots of stray glaze color on the inside bottom (SEE PICTURES) which is the way it was made, not a defect.

COLLECTOR NOTE: This pattern MUST have a light green rim stripe to be authentic railroad china. Syracuse China also made this pattern for the ACL with nearly identical floral designs but the base ware color was slightly different, with Syracuse being not quite as deep an ivory color as Buffalo. The Syracuse China name for this pattern was "Flowers of the Southland".

COLLECTOR BEWARE: Syracuse also used the same exact floral transfers on similar restaurant ware weight china, but with a BLACK rim stripe instead of green. The black striped pieces were NEVER railroad used. They are great to actually use on your dining table while the authentic pieces sit safely in the display cabinet.
