This is an unusual all black "Fido" terrier dog penny bank made by the Hubley Manufacturing Company, which made Fido still banks between 1914 and 1946. Most of them were the more familiar black and white. This one was made in solid black.
On the back of his head just above the coin slot is impressed DSGN PAT 1914 (Design patented 1914). Around his neck is a studded collar painted red, with his name FIDO in raised letters under his chin. His expression is so cute with his tongue sticking out -- and still mostly red.
Our Fido is in extremely nice overall original condition with no rust, no broken or missing parts, no cracks and no repairs. The ONLY issue is that most of the realistic eye painting has flaked away. Otherwise, most of his black paint is still present, as is most of the red paint on his collar and mouth.
Check out the superb molding: this piece was made in two pieces that fit tightly together and are firmly in place by a flat head screw.
There is little to no evidence of filing -- a top quality cast iron production.
SIZE is just over 5 inches tall at the very tip top of his ear. The base is approximately 4 inches by 3 inches. This piece weighs just under 1-3/4 pounds before packing.
