This Erie Railroad padlock would be a great addition to any railway collection . It comes with a good key with which it works well. We thought it likely was a Signal Department lock, but the only marking is the railroad name. It weighs 13 ounces, very heavy for its size.
A highly visible ERIE is strongly stamped on the front in bold block letters. On the other side is the maker stamping: the Corbin Cabinet Lock Company of Terryville, Connecticut with a patent number (SEE PICTURES). Near the keyhole on the bottom of the lock is stamped ER 84 , its individual number.
This lock is in excellent working condition and responds immediately and smoothly to the key. It comes with an older chain attached with a brass clevis loop that slides along the shackle and can be completely removed if desired.
The key appears to be an old replacement. A Star brand key, it is stamped GG&CO, almost certainly the mark of the locksmith that made it up to replace the original.
What a nice addition to any good Erie Railroad collection - and you could actually use it judiciously without harming any antique value !
