What an interesting lock set from the Union Pacific Railroad! This is an all-brass 6-lever lock made by the Eagle Lock Company, complete with a hollow barrel brass key, the type that has the little "wings" at the end of the barrel. We really like this set -- beyond working well, it has a lot of eye appeal with great color shadings, terrific patina and no damage other than honest signs of use.
This lock and key would have been used for some utility purpose at the UPRR. Overall length is just over 3 inches; the round body is 2 inches across and 3/8 inch thick; at over 6 ounces, it is very heavy for its size.
This lock has markings all over! It is strongly stamped UP on the shackle. On the body, the Eagle company information is stamped on the back. On the front, the drop bar over the key hole is covering EAGLE SIX-LEVER on the face. The drop bar dust cover is further stamped with an individual number 90.
CONDITION: The internal spring is very strong; the dust cover resists being pushed to the side and snaps back immediately over the keyhole when released. Please note where the UP on the shackle has been marred by apparent wear. This is surface only, it is worse on the back but we think it adds character because it is only cosmetic and affects nothing. The clevis loop is firmly attached on the side.
There are no markings on the key but it works perfectly with the lock. Please note, it can be hard to find this type of lock with a working key; too often, they get separated and with no identifying markings, too often they become lost.
