This unusual big, round old kitchen grater made by the Marvel Company. With its "Patent Pending" top mark, it is an early one that we believe dates from the 1930s or possibly into the earliest 1940s. We found fairly similar but smaller ones made by other companies, but could not find another quite like this. What a clever idea -- simply lay it across the top of the bowl you want to grate something into!
This grater is a large 9-1/2 inches across, with rings around the edge so it will fit on even larger bowls. It is tin, in very fine condition with NO surface rust and NO bent or split metal. It is slightly warped, as old tin often is, and we think that adds character, as does the slight color variation here and there. The outside edge is rolled tightly. There is NO rust anywhere! Please see our pictures -- it has the most appealing patina. Just think: A humble old kitchen tool -- with patina.
Like other graters this one has three different sizes of holes and one long slot for making slices. It is clean enough to use, but we would recommend that you not try to use it -- it is so extremely dull, the result certainly will disappoint you!
All this grater needs is a good collector ready to admire it! Just open the package and put it on your display shelf! It would be a real star standing up behind smaller objects in any vintage kitchenware collection!
