Here is a very good, authentic hat badge from the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad - the famous "Milwaukee Road" that ran through several states in the American Midwest.
This badge was worn by a train conductor, attached to the front of his uniform cap. It is made of gold color metal with black and dark red enamel decoration surrounding the lettering.
This badge is approximately 3-1/4 inches long measured straight across from tip to tip. It retains its original gentle arc, necessary to fit closely around the front of the hat. On the back are two threaded posts, each with a nut, to secure the badge on the hat. There is no maker mark (these were not maker stamped).
CONDITION: This badge displays well: There are NO chips in the enamel and the gold is brilliant. The nuts work perfectly and are not cross-threaded. IMPORTANT: It does show light use, which is not easily seen until you hold it closer than arm's length. SEE OUR PICTURES: On the upper portion, there is surface scuffing over the right side of the MILWAUKEE ROAD red logo.
Our "Railroadiana II" railroad price guide by Sue Knous includes one of these badges with a value of $125 - $150.
