This is a terrific, authentic Skookum doll depicting a Native American man. At 12 inches high and standing straight and tall all by himself with no props needed, he is an imposing figure! He appears to be from the later 1930s - l940s era -- very definitely before the newer 1950s dolls came along.

A "Bully Good" original Skookum Indian Doll paper label is attached to the bottom of his right foot.

His head is some sort of composition and sounds hollow when tapped (definitely not a dried apple). His face is superbly crafted with terrific, strong color and a wonderful expression.

His jet black wig appears to be mohair, rather than real human hair. A fabric twill tape headband is tight and secure. The minuscule colored beads (multiple sizes and some unbelievably tiny) are glass, with several wooden ones interspersed.

His legs and feet are carved wood. His "moccasins" appear to be the thinnest possible leather wrapped around his wooden feet. If you look closely, you can see designs painted on them. He is wearing a fabric tunic and wrapped in a swatch of old "Indian-style" felt blanket that has a very fuzzy surface and buckskin-color felt leggings. An old feather dyed green completes the picture.

BACKGROUND: Skookums are a unique type of doll to collect! A woman named Mary McAboy began to make them in 1913 and shortly thereafter received a patent. She carved the heads of her earliest dolls out of apples, which took on charming features as they dried and shrank, then turned to factory production with composition heads. These dolls, costumed to resemble Native Americans, were made into the 1950s; most were sold to tourists stopping at trading posts in western states.
