Here is a wonderful American Indian Skookum doll that dates from the later 1930s-1940s time period. He comes complete in costume with his original Bully Good Skookum paper label firmly attached to the underside of his right foot. This doll is 12 inches tall and stands perfectly on his own with no props needed.

Our warrior has a fabulous face - hand painted extremely well with a wonderful, solemn expression! looking decidedly off to the right. Helping to determine his age, he appears to have an undamaged composition head (definitely not plastic). His wig is mohair, and he has a twill tape fabric headband wrapped several times and knotted on the right side of his head.

His beads are glass (again, not plastic) with three much larger, oval, brown wooden beads adding interest.

The fabric tunic is hidden by an "Indian style" fuzzy felt blanket tightly wrapped and fastened securely around his wooden body. Wooden legs are covered with tan-colored felt leggings. His wooden feet are tightly covered in the thinnest possible leather (or possibly fabric material) moccasins. If you look very carefully, you can see a painted design on them.

CONDITION: This doll appears totally original ! The face and feet details are fabulous with no paint loss. There are no stains, rips or tears. The ONLY issue we can find is that his original, red-dyed feather has broken, and the top section is missing. This should be fairly easy to replace if you wish.

BACKGROUND: Skookums are a unique type of doll to collect! The earliest prototype was created around 1900 by a woman named Mary Francis Woods. Not long thereafter, another woman named Mary McAboy began to make similar dolls, for which she received a patent. Both women continued to produce dolls through the 1920s and 1930s. The heads of the very earliest dolls were carved apples that shrank as they dried, taking on charming wrinkled features. Later heads were made of composition material. As production increased, the dolls became factory made and continued to be very popular into the 1950s. That popularity is resurging today.
