This terrific old lock and key set are from the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad, perhaps better known as the New Haven. It is a car lock, made for use on freight cars. It is not a switch lock.
THE LOCK is iron or steel, cast with panels on both sides and NYNH&HRR across its face. A pendulum shaped brass drop swings over the keyhole. This lock retains a great deal of old black paint, likely its original coat. The shackle is not painted and does have the lightest signs of SURFACE ONLY rust (not "really" rust, rather discoloration). The iron clevis pin and loop are free and swing as intended. The chain appears to be original. It works very well with the key.
THE KEY is correct for this lock! One would never guess it is really a railroad key ! It looks like a cabinet key with a strange, flat "foot." There is no railway marking on this key (there is not supposed to be). It is either steel or iron and works smoothly with the lock.
As you might guess, these locks are recognizable but keys are wickedly hard to find, because they go unrecognized.
A terrific addition to any good collection of New England area railway hardware relics.
