This is a hard to find lock and key set, in superb condition, made for the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad Signal Department by the Yale & Towne Company. These P&LE signal locks are difficult to find even without a key, but here we have a great pair that work well together.
Our pictures show markings very well.: P. & L.E. R.R. appears in raised letters on one side of the body, surrounded by SIGNAL DEPT. The shackle is stamped MADE IN USA. On the opposite side of the body, YALE appears in raised letters and the shackle is further stamped YALE & TOWNE MFG. CO.
The key is marked LOCKWOOD on one side; it was made by the Lockwood Howe company of Fitchburg, Massachusetts. The original key would have been a Yale key; clearly this is a replacement, but it works well.
CONDITION is excellent. There are light surface bumps over most of the lock body, but they have no effect other than being signs of honest use. The markings are clear and strong.
IMPORTANT - please forgive the tiny "glittery" dots - they are flecks of graphite, which the former owner apparently used to maintain the lock in fine condition, and have no effect on anything.
Sadly, this lock and key set came from the estate of my friend Robert Heilemann, a leader of the West Coast Lock Collectors Assn. and an expert in these types of locks. There is no question in my mind that it is authentic and not a fake.
