This hat badge from the New York Central Railroad was ordered for an employee's uniform, but clearly never made it into service. It would have been used on the front of a cap. The occupation is GATEMAN - a harder one to find. Because that job was located at larger stations, the number of Gateman cap badges made was significantly less than for occupations spread throughout the entire system.
Please look at our pictures. This badge is "New Old Stock", with no signs of use. The strong stamping and pebbled background are absolutely correct. The blue background in the oval has no chips.
IMPORTANT: The raised surfaces of the silvery, stamped letters and oval framing the blue area appear blotchy, because they have not been rubbed from wear into a uniformly shiny finish. This is normal on this type of badge.
We guarantee this is actual, original railway equipment, likely ordered near the end of service.
BACKGROUND: The New York Central SYSTEM was a name that the New York Central used referring to itself between 1935 and 1968 when it was forced by the U. S. government into a merger with the Pennsylvania Railroad, creating the Penn Central System.
