This beautiful china compote is from the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad -- the famous "Milwaukee Road." The pattern name is "Peacock." A wide open bowl supported by a pedestal base, it would be a stunning addition to any collection.
CONDITION is lovely, with only very light surface marks from use. There are NO cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. The exotic central design is wonderfully bright and intricate, the male peafowl showing off in lifelike colors.
This piece is correctly bottom marked O.P. Co. / Syracuse China. The date code J-1 stands for January, 1929. "Peacock" dinnerware was never marked with a railroad name.
Collector Note: "Peacock" was an "exclusive" pattern, which means that the railway owned the rights to the design and no other customer was allowed to purchase it from the factory. HOWEVER, the exclusive agreement apparently applied ONLY when the bird was surrounded by the blue scallop edge design. This explains why the bird appears in other settings and the blue edge scallop design appears in other settings, but when they are found together, it is the Milwaukee Road Peacock ware.
