This pretty gravy boat was made for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway in their popular "Chessie" pattern that honored the adorable kitten the railway had adopted as their mascot and the public absolutely loved, but it is a hard to find piece because there are no C&O markings on it, hence it often goes unrecognized as dining car china.
This piece is cheerfully appealing in bright white with rich cobalt blue and mustard color stripes, a unique color combination and decoration that positively identifies it as from the C&O, a "companion piece" for others in the pattern that featured a black and white graphic of the little kitten sound asleep.
Condition is extremely nice: it is exceptionally clean with NO cracks, chips, flakes, repairs. There are a very few, hard to find surface marks from use. Even the spout shows no damage. Despite no railroad identification of any kind (See below, this is correct), this gravy boat is correctly marked with only the Syracuse China stamp on the underside. The date code 94-C translates to March 1965.
Chessie dinnerware may well have been a tremendous success, but instead it was lackluster. Despite the wild success of their Chessie the sleeping kitten advertising campaign begun in the 1930s -- one of the most successful and fondly remembered marketing campaigns ever developed -- and recognizing that much of the popularity of C&O's passenger trains was because the public had absolutely fallen in love with the adorable kitten, dining car china bearing Chessie's image was never ordered until 1955. It did last until the end of passenger service. Another mystery is why, although a variety of pieces were ordered in this pattern, the sleeping kitten logo appears on only three: the coffee/tea cup, the dinner size plate and a 4-inch ash tray.
