Here is one terrific, early 1900s lantern from the Boston & Maine Railroad. It is a tall globe Adlake Reliable model with a single wire guard and a gorgeous deep, dark cherry red Kopp globe.
It is complete and clean and needs nothing except a shelf on which to sit and a good collector to enjoy it. It is an eye catching display.
MARKINGS: The globe is factory etched B.&M.R.R. in impressive .75 inch tall letters (hard to see because the red is so dark). On the frame, B.&M.R.R is stamped into the lid just outside the smoke dome. Numerous patent dates are stamped around the edge of the lid -- the newest one is April 1913. The top of the lid has maker stamping: THE ADAMS & WESTLAKE "ADLAKE" RELIABLE with NEW YORK CHICAGO PHILA.
THE GLOBE: Has an extended base, and is just under 5.5 inches tall. In addition to the etched marking, a Kopp "Circle K" is molded into the side not far below the top. There are NO cracks or repairs, and no glass damage other than two flat, shallow flakes on the side of the EXTENDED BASE. These are cosmetic only and disappear completely when the globe is placed into the frame. There are the expected light surface scuffs on the rims. The glass is bright and shiny with no cloudiness but there are a few light flecks and dings from use on the surface.
IMPORTANT: The color is so dark it is difficult to see through. Please understand that we overexposed our pictures of the globe to show the etched lettering on it.
THE FRAME: All authentic, and wonderfully sound and solid with NO missing or broken pieces. Even the "button" on the very top of the smoke dome has no dents, and the smoke deflector is present inside the dome!
The frame is straight and strong. All the frame wires are straight with no bends. This model has "ears" on the frame that are used to keep the bail handle upright or allow it to swing. There is NO rust anywhere, not even in the bottom of the cup that holds the fount.
The fount is sound and solid with no holes (we did not test it) and complete with the correct brass burner which easily unscrews on undamaged threads. The wick raiser works. We have left wick in it.
SPECIAL NOTE: A previous owner restored and clear coated this lantern. He did a good job removing any rust and protecting the frame from any in the future but the coating does have a noticeable gloss.
