This is one of the most attractive keys we've seen from the Boston & Maine Railroad. It is the standard approximately 2 inch length but the bow is oversize, framing tall, serif Roman letters.
B&MRR is stamped on one side of the bow; on the other is stamped serial number 641. There is no maker mark. From its shape, this is an older key.
What a terrific display, with superb deepening golden color and great patina.
It's our experience that the Boston & Maine ordered more different locks and keys than most other railway operations. This one is sure to be missing from someone's good collection!
BACKGROUND: Headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, the Boston & Maine Railroad operated from 1836 until 1983, running through Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont and into New York. It was one of the backbone rail operations serving New England, a mainstay of the area. It finally went out in 1983 when it was taken over by Guilford Transportation Industries.
