This beautiful set is hallmarked on the tongue of the box clasp, but all I can make out is CS. The gold tests to 18k and the cannetille work is delicate and frames the golden topazes beautifully! This type of work was popular in the 1830's because gold was in short supply, and labour was cheap, so this very labour intensive work was done to maximum effect. The topazes are open backed and are roughly 1/4 inch or more around, and a couple are oval. The drop pear shaped topaz is 12mm by 9mm. the earrings are 1 5/8 inches long not including the ear wire. The ear wires are newer additions. The necklace has had some repairs done over the years and one of the back disks has soft solder repair which has been gold painted. Some of the links have the same repairs at the back. The pink gold topazes have natural inclusions and are just lovely. This necklace is 13 1/2 inches long and could be lengthened with chain added to the back. The total weight of the set is 31,7 grams. C. 1830 and Continental.
