This is one of four antique botanical prints I have available. This one is of the red currant bush.

Although I've categorized these as art prints, with each one I list, I find myself more and more convinced that these are actual hand-painted illustrations. Note the close up photo I've included. You can see that there's a light 'glaze' like layer over the drawing. It is this detailed design, richly saturated colors, the quality and FEEL of the illustrations that make me think these are hand-painted pen and ink drawings. (Can the stone lithography process produce a color print that feels like that? Were some books truly illustrated by hand??) The illustration is just over 5.5 by 8.5 inches. It is blank verso, but I have included a scan of that also just to show how pristine the paper is. Do look at the last photo where I have all four grouped together. The photo shows details that the scan washes out. The illustration is surrounded by a distinct, embossed border.

Unfortunately, the accompanying text page is not so pristine but shows foxing and aging. This page is about a quarter inch smaller than the illustration page. When was the last time you read something that had been typeset printed?:)

All of these pages have small holes like those formed in book signatures when the thread is removed and pages separated, but the holes don't line up. That's when I realized these pages have been paired together but they were not originally in the same book. Somewhere in the passing centuries, someone was determined, however, to keep the illustration with the informative text and so there are two notations. There's the obvious hot pink ink 402. However, look the "G 156" notated on each page has been written by hand also!

One of my favorite designer decor sites offers matted and framed antique botanical prints for $850 each. Not near as pretty as this one, which will look incredible once matted and framed. Indeed, proper matting should take care of that funky pink number! For a lot less than $850:)

You might want to pair this with one of the other prints, any of which would coordinate well. Remember: BUY MORE, Save More!
