I'm sure that this kind of paper cutting art has a name, but through the years, I've never met anyone who knows. I have postcards from the turn of the century with this kind of paper cutting, but I've never come across a piece like this in such excellent, pristine condition. From examining it, I'm thinking it is a special double thickness paper? I just know that there is a definite edge on the curved corner accents and yet as you can see from the back side, this is one sheet. Fortunately, we don't have to know what this type of art is called or how it's made to appreciate the beauty!
As best as I can translate, the French text in the center says:
I have in my heart and I'm proud of it
Nothing but une place and one love
The place is yours
My heart is for you forever.
I can envision this card with a velvet backdrop, framed in a shadowbox. Wouldn't it make a unique anniversary or wedding gift? The card measures 5.5 by 3 inches. It is a light cream color as seen in the direct scan. The photos make the paper look whiter but its a lush antique creamy white.
I can't pinpoint a date for this love note, but I know this type of fine writing is usually found on pre-WWI items. Whether it's vintage or antique may be disputable, but certainly not its beauty and craftsmanship.
