Paul's Restaurant is located at 15 Place Dauphine on Île de la Cité in Paris. The restaurant's "motto," if you will, is "The old beautiful Paris." Interestingly, in the book "Remembering Paris," featuring the art of André Renoux and text by Denis Tillinac, the latter writes, "The facade of Restaurant Paul helps to preserve my illusion that the Paris of my childhood has not changed. On Place Dauphine, time seems to stand still." (I've included a Google street view that verifies this statement!) On the restaurant's web site*, they write: Have you heard of our beloved Place Dauphine? What makes this place so special is its secret location that makes it unknown for the Parisians. When spring arrives, plenty of colors gracefully dress the square. The meeting point is Paul’s."
Shall we make reservations now?! Understanding the history of the restaurant makes one appreciate all the more why Renoux immortalized it and himself by painting it.
Hint of wear on the right edge, but overall, in near mint unused condition. Circa 1980s-1990s. About 5.75 by 4-1/8 inches.
*"This “institution” of Place Dauphine was built at the beginning of the XX century and still preserves its original architecture. Back in the day, Restaurant Paul was called “Au rendez-vous des cochets”, a meeting place for artists and intellectuals. Later, during the 20’s and 30’s the restaurant changed owners until it got its actual name.
During the resistance, Paul went through the war and due to its restrictions, it was only allowed to serve restricted portions, like half apples and single spoons of chestnuts cream as desert. In 1948, the place was sold again to one of the employees who just got married with the host of a nearby restaurant.
This young lady became “Madame Paul” and an undeniable celebrity of La Place Dauphine. Thanks to her, the restaurant took a reputation of a familiar French style restaurant with a international spread, recalling the nostalgia of many."
