I'm a bit frustrated because there is much more I'd love to know about this postcard, but in lieu of history, we'll have to settle for beauty and gold! This is an artist signed postcard; alas the stamp covers the name. Louis Théophile Hingre could have been another Mucha, in my opinion, but his heart was in animal sculpture, working with metals. Hingre was a French artist (1832-1911) who did indeed leave behind some breath-taking Art Nouveau designs, like this one, which were often originally advertisements. I'd love to know what this design was titled and used to sell what? One of his famous pieces was for a wallpaper company. According to the French Wikipedia site, it was Hingre's admiration of Mucha that prompted him to dabble in the Art Nouveau poster craze. Although he spent many years in England learning the art of working in bronze, he continued to exhibit at the art salons and exhibitions in Paris, right up till the year before he died, just shy of his 79th birthday. Most of his work is in private collections because he received so many commissions. We're lucky that a few of his Art Nouveau designs have been preserved for "the masses" via postcards.
This card is striking looking at it straight on and even more dazzling when held at an angle and all the metallic gold overlay shines! There are also glitter accents added in the lady's arm bands.
The franking is difficult to read but I think it is 1904; the actual printing of the card is even earlier (1903 or late 1800s) based on the divided back.
Hints of wear visible in the photos/scans, but overall, for its age, this card is in fine antique condition. About 3.5 by 5.5 inches.
