This is one of my favorite designs by the father of Art Nouveau, Alphonse Mucha. The colors are soft and muted. The gold overlay doesn't show up in the flat, direct scan but as you can see in the photos I took at an angle, when the light hits it (natural daylight or lamp light) the gold pigment around the woman heads glows like an aura! Even the words "champagne" at the bottom are in gold. You don't see advertisement postcards like this today. This was a design commissioned in 1899 by Moët et Chandon, one of the world's largest champagne producers dating back to 1743.
The creamy white background has aged over the last 114 years to a light ecru, but the colors are still impressively preserved: peach, pink, light red, pale green, lots of blue around her head in the detailed circular design. As if being a signed Mucha postcard isn't enough, I must say that I think the message written at the side is special too. This card was mailed from Algeria on Sept. 21, 1903, from one Louise to another in Marseille. Louise in Algeria writes (as best as I can translate) that she has received the 'carte-lettre.' This is a folding letter postcard with perforated edges that can be sealed. Apparently, inside Louise's carte-lettre, she received a "mandat." I believe she is referring to a money order because she says the letter was expedited to her quickly and thanks her friend for sending it so quickly; she had forgotten to mention that in the last letter. But then again, she could actually be referring to a mandate as in working orders. She writes, "Always increasingly eager to return to France, waiting for a response to the request to change impatiently." So Louise is very much homesick! Would love to know what her job was in Algeria. Perhaps her husband was a soldier stationed there? This postcard is typical antique postcard size, about 3.5 by 5.5 inches. For its age, it is in fine antique condition.
