This is one of five postcards I have in a rare series of unsigned Raphael Kirchner (1876–1917) designs produced by M.M. Vienne. According to Neudin's "Les Meilleures Cartes Postales d'Illustrateurs," there are possibly 9-10 cards in this series with the lavender background.
This one features a vestal virgin picking an iris as two butterflies flutter nearby. She, too, is dressed in yellow (like two others in the series) and she, too, is a beautiful red-head. While all the others wear their hair up, this one's hair hangs down and long it is, going halfway down her back. A serpent arm band adds to the Neo-Classical feel of this series.
Mailed to Maria in Oct of 1900, the message is rather humorous. I have enough trouble understanding French, let alone Spanish, but the gist is that Juan was not in good graces with Maria. "I do not forget your collection or the collector ... [can't decipher the underlined part] It is not easy to find nice postcards as nice as you wish." But surely, receiving another Kirchner would have earned Juan some brownie points:)
Typical antique postcard size: about 3.5 by 5.5 inches. Please note: Album impressions at the corners. Verso, superficial creases do not come all the way through to the front. Overall, I'd classify this card as in fine antique condition, especially given its age: about to be 117 years old! Also, the yellow is a nice saturated yellow. I don't know the technical reasons that scanners and cameras don't record colors accurately. I spend a lot of time trying to tweak the colors in Photoshop for more accuracy. And then to compound the situation, everyone's computer monitors are calibrated differently. But I guarantee the card will look better in hand!
