Featuring the iconic image of the Belfort lion, I always assumed this was a Paris hotel luggage label because I've seen many postcards of this statue in the 14th arrondissement. However, after some Google searching to learn if the hotel was still in business, I've discovered that statue is but a miniature of the original lion, which is in Belfort, France (northeastern France, situated between Lyon and Strasbourg). Created by Frédéric Bartholdi, who also sculpted our Statue of Liberty, the original Belfort lion was finished in 1880 and is entirely made of red sandstone blocks, which were individually sculpted and then moved under Belfort castle to be assembled. The colossal work is about 72 feet long and 36 feet high. This label is only 5 by 3.25 inches, but impressive in its own right:) I must share this photo courtesy of Thomas Bresson and Wikipedia of the Belfort lion. Now, you'll want to put it on your bucket list, n'est-ce pas?
The last photo is a glimpse of what else I have available. If you would be interested in a luggage label from a certain city in France or from a specific country, send me a message and I'll look through my stash. I'll get it listed and notify you to give you first opportunity at buying it, but at no obligation. Your requests help me narrow down where to start when I have so many of something, whether it be postcards, luggage labels or other ephemera. Merci beaucoup!
