In my search for postcards, my specialty, I discovered this gorgeous board game and couldn't resist. My online research says that bog was a card-gambling game that originated in the 14th century in Sicily. I found a web site of a French woman who restores antique games and this is what she had to say: The game of bog was in vogue in France for about 50 years from 1855 to 1910. This game will become a classic of the late nineteenth century publishers, before disappearing between the two world wars. This disappearance coincided with the stoppage of activity of many publishers of "new games" that produced it and with the gradual success of poker in France. Another French blog site I found, which bears a picture of this version of the game, extends the game's production into the 1920s. The thick cardboard six-sided hexagonal has an opening in the middle. One of the bloggers said this was where the lamp or candle goes. The game board folds as you can see in the photo. When it is opened, it measures just over 17 inches across at the widest points; just over 15 inches on the side. Minimal signs of wear for its age, which, based on one of the aforementioned blogs, I'm guessing dates to the turn of the century or later, circa 1900s. I could be totally wrong but I don't think this is one of the 1800s' early models. The section with the Jeu de Bog title shows the most wear, of course. The inside Jack, King and Queen, are outstandingly well preserved. The metallic gold leaf is applied generously. Rich, deep colors. The seams between sections are strong. Please note: I have included a direct scan as well as photos. Since computer monitors and color calibration often vary -- even my camera and scanner don't register the colors exactly the same -- the game board may not be exactly the tones you see here, but it will be somewhere in between and definitely beautiful with richly saturated colors!
This board game would be a knockout framed in a shadow box. And ... if you're into costumes, it makes one very original and unique collar:) Price includes shipping and insurance within the US.
