The fervor of postcard collecting during its Golden Age at the turn of the century increased exponentially when a person was trying to get all the pieces in a specific series. Especially when those pieces formed a puzzle that revealed something special when all were placed together in the right order. This set of 10 antique French postcards is a superb example. The life of Bernadette of Lourdes unfolds in each scene. Put all together, a statue of the Virgin Mary comes together in the center! These cards were all written to Jules from Joseph on May 17, 1915. This collection is all the more poignant when we see that these cards were mailed during war time. When you put together all the phrases Joseph wrote on the backs of the cards, it reads (as best as I can decipher): Friendship Souvenir of 1914-1915 of the war. To the whole house good morning. Thinking of your son To see us all again with your son To all of you in hope
I've included direct scans and photos. The cards in hand will look even better. Lots of color tinting, all done by hand. The Virgin Mary's skin has a light pink flesh tone wash on it that is not captured in the direct scan. Cards No. 1 and 3 show wear on the right/inside edge. Cards No. 1 and 2 do not match up precisely. This is, after all, printing from over a century ago. But overall, these cards are in very fine antique condition.
Imagine these matted and framed to create a stained glass effect!
