This bronze medal is a souvenir of one's ascension to the summit of the Eiffel Tower. Dated 1889, the year the Eiffel opened, there is designated space verso where a person could have his or her name engraved. Luckily for you, this medal is ready for you to customize with your own name! But no cheating. You have to go visit the Eiffel first, if you haven't already:) Just over 1-1/2 inches (1 and 9/16th to be exact), this Paris souvenir weighs a hefty 41 grams. What is of note, in my opinion, is that although the previous owner didn't have their name engraved, they must have indeed treasured this medal and carried it with them. I imagine the Parisian rubbing it, hidden in his pocket (yes, for some reason I picture this is a young boy) and he rubs it often like a lucky charm, a rabbit's foot. How else do we explain the words on the medal being so worn down? Indeed, under the Eiffel tower on front, each building and monument is named with its height listed, to show that at that time, the Eiffel was the tallest building on earth, even higher than the pyramids! The words on each side of the Eiffel note that work commenced Jan. 27, 1887 and finished May 6, 1889. While these words have indeed been worn down, the 'souvenir de mon ascension au sommet de La Tour Eiffel -- 1889' is still quite readable. I've included a variety of photos, holding the medal in different directions under natural daylight to give you an accurate view of this historical treasure.
Wouldn't this make a special necklace for the Francophile in your life?
