These two bird-themed postcards are a special pair. Although the dove die-cut card shows soiling at the edges, the 100+ year old lace is in impeccable condition: still starched and stiff. The postal cancellation version looks to be 1906! The Bonne Annee greeting on the front is French for Happy New Year.
The hand-painted blue bird carries happy birthday wishes. In French, "anniversaire" refers to one's birthday. I can't understand all of the message verso but Auguste is telling the birthday boy how much stronger their friendship is. He says he's writing from camp, but what kind of camp I'm not sure. One interesting tidbit I did decipher is that the branch drawn in the top left corner is a 'souvenir of Rameaux,' of Palm Sunday. Note the date: April 16, 1916.
Each card is typical antique size: about 5.5 by 3.5 inches.
