This canvas-backed map of the Nancy region of France would be a unique piece of wall art for the bicycling or travel enthusiast. This map was produced by Maison Andriveau-Goujon of Paris for the Touring Club of France. I can't positively date this map but in the far left corner 1912-1917 is noted. The Touring Club itself was formed in 1890 due to the popularity of the velocipede. The map measures about 2x3 feet. I have included photos and direct scans. As you can see, it is in incredible condition for its age. The back side of the canvas is almost pristine. I have to confess that canvas-backed maps are 'new' to me. The idea of cutting the map and securing it on canvas, spaced apart just enough to avoid creases on the map itself is ingenious. The colors are rich: green and pink/red. A beautiful, well preserved, durable map that gives any traveler -- whatever mode of transport one uses -- a sure case of wanderlust.
