This vintage medal is about 1.25 inches tall and just under an inch wide. A bas relief figure adorns the front: a woman with her hair pulled back in a chignon wears a loose gown. She is holding up a statue of a discus thrower. Definite Greek overtones here, so it's only natural to immediately think this is such a charming Art Nouveau design.
However, when you flip the medal over, you will be a bit surprised to see the date 1955 and it was for a basketball tournament, apparently sponsored by Le Soir, a Belgian daily newspaper still in operation today. The raised leaf design again carries Art Nouveau overtones.
I'm assuming the medal is bronze; the pendant weighs 5 ounces. In the hands of an artistic person, this would be a fine centerpiece for an upcycled pendant or necklace. Perhaps a rhinestone to cover the discus thrower?
