This postcard is from Meissner & Buch's "GLÜCKLICHE ZEIT" (Happy Time) series, No. 1066. This is a German printed postcard with an undivided back which dates it to 1904 or earlier. It is franked on the back but I'm not certain how to decipher which numbers on a German cancellation. If it's the top line, then this card was mailed in October of 1900.
On the front in French is written "A big thank you for the beautiful card that gave me much pleasure. A thousand kisses from your Violette."
Note the M.S.M. under the embossed gold frame border. Sadly, the artist's initials, whose name has been lost through the century? (Artists not being credited and recognized for their work but being exploited by publishers is an age-old problem.)
This card shows signs of wear: creases at the bottom left and right corner of the frame, light ink smudges on the lady's dress, worn spots at the top of the frame inside border. And still .... isn't it a beauty!? The marquise in her jaunty green hat with the huge feathers --- the colors are soft and muted around her porcelain face. Such is the quality of the lithographs Meissner & Buch printed and established their reputation so soundly!
Size: about 3.5 by 5.5 inches.
