This English fish plate features, as its centerpiece, a common eel...or so it is handwritten on the back. However, add a two inch embossed border of large, seashells hand painted in salmon pink and highlighted with a sea foam green and tart tangerine, coral and this 9 inch plate is anything but common! It is signed on the front by the talented artist, J. Bigbeck and reversed appears to be numbered the 5th plate out of 4550 plates produced.
The stamped and embossed pottery marks also on the back belong to that of maker E.J.D. Bodley (Edwin James Drew Bodley) which makes this plate a true antiques because this company was declared bankrupt in 1892. It started out in 1875 and prior to E.J.D. Bodley taking over it was known as "Bodley and Son"; 1874 - 1875.
Surrounding the Bodley hallmark is an circle or oval indicating the plate was originally purchased and sold at Gilmore Collamore & Co. Collamore & Co. was a high-end New York City importer of porcelain and glass, headed by Davis Collamore (7 October 1820 — 13 August 1887). The store, in its day, was compared to Tiffany & Co. and Black Starr & Frost.
This fabulous, English beauty is in EXCELLENT CONDITION with no chips, cracks or restoration of any kind.
