A very elegant handpainted Plum Opalescent glass butterfly by Martha Reynolds for the Fenton Art Glass Company. Martha Reynolds is responsible for many award winning decorating designs at Fenton Glass. This butterfly, a Fenton symbol, is special because it is made of Plum Opalescent glass, a color discovered by accident when working with cranberry glass. It was one of Frank Fenton's favorites and it has gold in the formula just like cranberry glass.
This butterfly was purchased in the Fenton Gift Shop in Williamstown, West Virginia and bears the sticker with department number 17 indicating a sample. It was never in the regular line and may be one of a kind. Tiny crushed glass particles, or 'frit' have been fired on along the edges of the wings. The white of the opalescence and the iridescence along with the gold decoration make this a very elegant piece.
It is 3 1/2 inches long and signed by Martha Reynolds on the bottom. There is some roughness underneath along an edge where it was cut off the base, but I think that was done during production and is not damage. Every other part is in excellent condition. Enjoy!
