Beautiful & Rare Leather covered Wooden Trunk or Coffer from Spain with ornamental brasswork and studding, and a decorative interior printed cotton lining. (The lining needing a little repair , coming unstitched with some tears by the metal hinges- see photo)
A highly unusual and decorative piece of furniture, the coffer is also idiosyncratic in that the front of the lid rests on the top of the front panel rather than overlapping it, thus giving a very slight slope on the top of the coffer-as opposed to being exactly parallel to the ground, - (see photos)
Both sides of the coffer have decorative brass studded 'Star of David' motifs, inside which are the carrying handles.
The coffer also has its original lock.
Coffers have always been very prominent and important as items of furniture in Spanish homes, dating back to mediaeval times, and I have found some wonderful examples before, often with boxwood inlay into walnut front panels- I have never had one like this with its amazing brasswork decoration.
Dating between 1850 and 1900, the coffer measures 34 inches long x 17 high x 19 deep. In good condition , though with some wear to the leather edges of the lid and minor though repairable damage to the interior lining as described.
