Fine Portrait Painting in Oil of a mid-19th century French Nobleman or Notable. The painting is signed J.Vaudechamp , an accepted artist who lived between 1790 and 1866. (Vaudechamps other paintings have a highest sale value of approximately $25,000)
The portrait is very finely painted in oils. The man in early middle age has a benign expression and wears a high collar with a white 'neckerchief' tied in a bow- from his appearance he is a person of some importance.
The Painting measures 25 inches tall x 21 wide. . The condition is good- though there are crackle marks visible at close range
which sometimes develop in the surface varnish but can be eliminated by a restorer. (From my personal taste I find these acceptable.) Circa date 1830-1850. From France (French School).
(Jean Joseph Vaudechamp was born in France in 1790- he lived for many years in New Orleans in the days of French Louisiana, and many of his portraits were painted there. His 'Portrait of a Young Woman Partially Draped' was sold at auction in New Orleans in 2013 for $25000 approx.)
